10th anniversary. He further disclosed that Don Jazzy will
produce the album for him. However, a date for the album release is yet to

Jonathan fighting a
lost battle against
media -APC
The All Progressives Congress has condemned
what it called the unreasonable siege on
newspapers across the country by security
agencies. The party warned that the President Goodluck
Jonathan’s administration, by tampering with
press freedom, had taken on a battle it could
not win. In a statement in Lagos on Sunday by its
Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, the party said the President failed
to learn the lessons of history that the Nigerian
media could neither be intimidated nor
suppressed by anyone. APC reminded the President that “all those who
tried to do so in the past lived to regret their
actions.” It wondered why a government that was being
asked to diligently prosecute the war on terror
was instead vehemently waging a war on the
media and using the security agencies to
interfere with the country’s democracy. APC said, ”Had the government pursued the
insurgents, who are killing and maiming
Nigerians with the same vigour with which it had
descended on the media, the war against terror
would have been long over.” It wondered what kind of “weapons that the
small newspaper distribution vans could be
used to ferry that cannot be conveyed by other,
bigger vehicles that move around the country
undisturbed.” The party described as disingenuous and
ridiculous the explanation that an intelligence
alert was responsible for the “shameful and
unacceptable clampdown” on the media, and the
platitude that the Jonathan administration held
the media in high esteem. It added, ”Even if one believes the
administration’s babble that President Jonathan
holds the media in high esteem, how can that
be justified by the indignities being meted out to
the media under his watch? How does the so-
called intelligence report justify the arrest of media workers, detention of distribution vans
and the impounding of newspapers? How does it
justify the restriction of newspaper circulation?
How does it justify an administration’s efforts to
tamper with fundamental rights guaranteed by
the nation’s constitution? ”With the clampdown on the media, the
Jonathan administration has opened a new but
dangerous flank in its war against Nigerians. “First, it was an attempt to stifle the freedom of
assembly and the freedom of speech when a
yeoman Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu,
tried but failed to ban peaceful protests in
Abuja. The outcry against the obviously-
orchestrated ban on peaceful protests had barely died down when the government moved
to stifle press freedom. But it is a lost battle.”

Professor Rahamon Adisa Bello - Unilag VC Akoka area of Lagos was locked down in a
heavy traffic on Friday as students of the
University of Lagos protested in the school,
accusing the management of extortion. The students locked the school gates for over
six hours and stopped vehicles from entering or
going out of the school premises, causing a
gridlock which extended to some parts of Ikeja
and Bariga. The protest was in reaction to the alleged
introduction of N10,000 penalty for late
registration of courses by the school authorities.
According to the students, the penalty for late
registration of courses, which increased by
N5,000 every week, had accumulated to N20, 000 since the policy was introduced four weeks
ago. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the
fact that students who were taking the general
course, GST, examination were asked to pay
N600 for the examination, which they said used
to be free. The students, who called on the authorities to
reverse the move and refund the money that
had so far been paid by some of them as
penalty for late registration, threatened to
continue the protest if they still have difficulty
accessing the online portal on Monday. One of the protesters, Ayodele Abayomi,
alleged that the newly-introduced fee on late
registration and introduction of N5,000 health
insurance fee, which started in 2012/2013
session, were extortion by the school
authorities. “Before now, there was nothing like late
registration of courses because students
sometimes need to edit or delete some of the
courses they already registered for, which
students have genuine reasons to do all the
time,” he said. In UNILAG, late payment of tuition fee attracts
a N10,000 penalty, which the students said they
were aware of. A 400 level student of Metallurgical Engineering,
Sulaimon Taiwo, said the protest was also
prompted by fears that UNILAG was taking after
the public universities that increased their tuition
fees recently. “We are afraid because we see what is
happening at the Lagos State University, Ojo,
Lagos and the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-
Ife, Osun State, where tuition fees have been
increased beyond the reach of many students,”
he said. A 400 level Mass Communication student of the
university, Victor Olanipekun, said the protest
was justified, and wondered why the
management would ask students to pay for
editing their courses. “This protest is right. Asking us to pay for
editing our course forms is unjustifiable. We
need a student union in this school. Although
the protest was successful, we would have
spoken with one voice if we had SUG,” he said. However, the protest was like a carnival as the
students, who employed the service of a Disk
Jockey, were seen dancing to the music at the
school gate. In a statement by the institution’s Assistant
Registrar, Information Unit, Olawale
Olasunmade, which was made available to
Saturday PUNCH, the school denied the
students’ allegations. The statement read, “The portal of the school
remains open and available for students to
access; add and delete and continues to be free
on the university portal and there is no
increment in the charges for late registration.” The school, however, said that examinations,
which were to start on June 23, 2014, had been
postponed till June 30, 2014 following the
protest.

Kefee’s Coma Caused By Pregnancy High Blood Pressure, Preeclampsia; Her Survival Chance
Is Slim – Doctor Nigerian singer Kefee who suddenly collapsed on a Chicago bound plane few days ago is still in coma. Her
doctor said all she needs to survive is miracle. She has been diagnosed with a dangerous High Blood Pressure that is usually induced by pregnancy. Preeclampsia is a condition where protein is detected in the urine of women over 20 weeks pregnant. It is a condition in pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, sometimes with fluid retention and
proteinuria. In a telephone conversation with tribune, the medical source said the aforementioned medical condition is
what led to her collapse on the airplane. Hear what Nigerian Doctor Adeyefa said about Kefee’s condition: “Kefee surely did not know that she had a high blood pressure before she embarked on the long trip and
suddenly went into coma in the air. That she is pregnant has made her situation dicey, so she will need a
miracle to survive, a doctor told me.” “Kefee is in a precarious situation because of the six months pregnancy. If the foetus had been nine
months, the doctors would have removed the baby and saved the mother and child. As it is now, not only
will the baby not survive because the carrier is in coma, Kefee may also lose her life from further
complications. The chances of the mother surviving is narrow, while the kid has a narrower chance. I urge
Nigerians to pray for her for a miracle because that is what she really needs.” Please join Kefee in your prayers..There is nothing God can’t do.

Police repel Biafra group

A Biafra separatist group yesterday failed in its bid to overrun the Enugu State Government and seize a radio station.
The police stopped the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM) from achieving its aim and arrested its leader, Ben Onwuka and 12 others.
A police sergeant and a member of the group died during a gun battle at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS).
Onwuka, a United Kingdom-based lawyer, armed with a CD Rom for a broadcast to declare a “Republic of Biafra”, led members to the station. The defunct Eastern region attempted secession as Biafra Republic which led to a 30-month Civil War between 1967 and January 1970.
In the early hours of March 7, the group attacked the Enugu Government House to hoist the flag of the still-born Republic of Biafra. They insisted that Enugu was still the capital of Biafra.
Onwuka and over 500 of his members were on November 5, 2012 arrested by the police and detained at the Enugu prisons, after the group re-declared the Republic of Biafra.
The police in March declared Onwuka wanted after the attempted invasion of the Government House.
Yesterday, the  BZM members, numbering about 20, as early as 4.30 am sneaked into the premises of the radio station where Onwuka intended to broadcast the rebirth of the Republic of Biafra.
They chased out the security men and entered the studio where they met a handful of employees who were on night shift.
But, the radio station was going through challenges as a result of which every gadget was switched off. They were on the verge of forcing some technical employees to switch on the gadgets when the police arrived.
The security personnel who ran out of the radio house alerted the police and four policemen arrived in two different police cars.
Despite being four, they gunned down one of them and arrested two. One of the policemen was overpowered by some of the BZM members hiding in the bush. He was disarmed and shot him. An Inspector was injured.
When reinforcement came, the BZM members had escaped by scaling the fence of the Radio House.
But the police chased and caught up with them, arresting the leader, Onwuka and 12 others.
Enugu Police chief, Mohammed Abubakar Mohammed said the suspects invaded the Enugu Broadcasting Service with the intention of setting the place ablaze.
He paraded the arrested members before the media.
Mohammed said: “When they invaded the place and by the time we reached there, we discovered a lot of arms, a lot of machetes, they went there with 25 litres of petrol with about 46 empty beer bottles and one Biafran flag.
“They went there with even guns because when the police confronted them, they shot and killed the sergeant and in the process of trying to prevent them from setting the place ablaze, they also had a casualty. One of them was shot dead.
“About 13 of them were arrested including the leader, Benjamin Igwe Onwuka,”  the commissioner said.
According to him, they got access into the studio, got the people in the studio and wanted them to give them access for a live broadcast to the people.
Said he: “They had a CD Rom where the details of what they wanted to say are contained.
“The highlights of what they wanted to tell the public was an appeal calling for all boys from Obiagu, Ogui and entire Enugu to come out. They also asked students to come out.  The people with Keke NAPEP to come out.  They wanted to order all businesses to be closed today (yesterday). All schools, markets, offices to be closed and all the elected government officials to surrender all government property in their possession by midday. These people went there in a sense to overturn the government,” he said.
The police chief warned: “I want to sound this note of warning to any group of persons or individuals that are planning to foment trouble in whatever form to cause breach of the peace to any community and to any society in this country, we shall not tolerate that.”
The police refused to allow the suspects to be interviewed by reporters.
